About the New York Times Crossword
The New York Times Crossword first appeared in 1942 and has been edited by Will Shortz since 1993. A new puzzle is published every day of the week, and the difficulty rises as the week goes on: Monday puzzles are the easiest and Saturday puzzles are the hardest. The Sunday crossword is the showpiece — a larger 21×21 grid with a playful theme.
Every weekday and Saturday grid is 15×15. Themes, wordplay and clever misdirection are the heart of the puzzle, which is exactly why a good answer guide is so useful when one corner refuses to fall.

Tips for solving the NYT Crossword
- Start with the short fill — 3 and 4 letter answers and common crosswordese give you footholds.
- Watch for question marks; they signal a pun or wordplay rather than a literal clue.
- Abbreviated clues usually want abbreviated answers.
- Solve the theme entries early on themed days — they unlock big chunks of the grid.
- If you are truly stuck, reveal a single crossing letter here rather than the whole answer.
